Internship

I completed around 1,300 hours throughout the course of about 28 weeks during the summer.  Unfortunately, this was too many hours to keep track of daily as I worked around 7 hrs/plus per day.   I completed this internship through Bay Area Christian Church.  The internship consisted of vigorous classes taught by my church’s staff members, extensive readings of various books of the Bible, exams, preaching, studying the Bible with peers and volunteering at the teen and middle school camps along with helping at the Hope Technology School.   I received very positive feedback from all of my employers/teachers as they each saw growth and maturity by the end of the summer program.

Although at the time, I was not aware of the weekly journal requirement; my entries would have consisted of the following:

  • My volunteer work at the Hope Technology School
  • The internship classes, meetings, and trainings
  • New and strengthened relationships
  • My time leading and creating Bible studies
  • My volunteer experiences at both middle school and teen camp
  • My sharing and preaching at various events

I learned many things from my internship at the Bay Area Christian Church.  Through this program, I built lasting relationships, character, learned many new things from the Bible, enhanced my public speaking abilities, and above all, learned how to truly become selfless for my peers.  In the large meetings that were held each week, I learned how to speak my mind even when it was frightening and intimidating.  I also created many new relationships with people from different counties who were nothing like me.  I was taught how to build these friendships on love rather than things we may have had in common.  With these relationships, I learned how to be vulnerable and honest about what went on within my heart instead of discussing the shallow things.  Most importantly, I learned how to work together with these friendships towards the common goal of saving lives by bringing people to God.  These men and women greatly shaped me over the summer and are a huge part of who I am today.

My day-to-day throughout the summer was very hectic and busy.   First, I would wake up at around 8 am to pray and read.  Then, I would catch the bus to the Bart station by 10 am where I would meet my friends.  From there we would go to Fremont where we would lead a Bible study with one of our peers.  After about an hour and a half, we would walk back to the Bart station and travel to Hayward where we would lead another Bible study.  Sometimes afterwards, we would head back to Alameda to lead yet another Bible study.  Shortly after the Bible study, we would catch bus back to the Bart station and head to church in Hayward.  After church, we would stay up late trying to finish the reading and writing assignment due the following morning in the internship meeting.  Although this is an example of one of the days, many of the days were much busier and consisted of various other activities.

I did not expect any of what I experienced throughout the internship.  I did not that it would be as vigorous and time consuming as it ended up being.  I also did not expect to come out of it with so many new friendships and so much more character. The internship taught me many valuable skills that could not have been taught anywhere else and I am truly grateful for the amazing experience.
